All Foals should be blood tested at 24 hours to assess IgG (antibody levels in blood) - ideally in excess of 800 mg/dl. Levels below this indicate Failure of Passive Transfer (FPT) as a result of deficient colostrum or inadequate suck. In such circumstances Plasma (antibodies) should be given intravenously ASAP to maintain antibody levels in foals blood, as Foal will not develop his /her own functioning immune system for up to 90 days.
